Malaysia’s former 4th Premier Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamad seems to be caught in a vicious dilemma nowadays when he is forced to align himself and be seen with those who were once his staunchest political enemies like DAP’s Lim Kit Siang, Kit Siang’s son Lim Guan Eng who is the State of Penang’s Chief Minister, PKR’s Selangor Menteri Besar Dato Seri Azmin Ali and PAS’s breakaway splinter group PAN’s President the brash talking and often controversial Mohamad Sabu.
Mahathir shaking hands (in the photo below) with Mat Sabu who had been lambasting him all these years. An unimaginable scenario before this.
As they say, there are no permanent friends or enemies when it comes to politics. They will twist and turn, flip flop like nobody’s business and turn into chameleons when and if they see fit.
A scenario that would have been deemed as impossible just a couple of years back here in Malaysia! Who would have dared to even imagine of such an unbelievable turn of situations. The Barisan National’s once toughest Chairman hobnobbing with the Leaders of Malaysian Opposition!
The following imagined thought clouds seems very appropriate and relevant, aren’t they? These are not my words but derived from published content on Google Search.

Mahathir did the unthinkable move joining forces with the leaders of the Malaysian Opposition just to be able to rally up support to oust Dato Seri Najib Razak, the current Malaysian PM, whom he once groomed and anointed as his former ruling party’s supreme leader forcing out the 5th Premier Tun Abdullah Badawi. Common goal. To bring down Najib!
Problem for Tun Dr.Mahathir is that he is somewhat delusional into thinking that the Malaysians as a people would want to get involved in any such political upheaval ala the violent street protests that toppled dictators in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Indonesia or in Thailand.
Malaysians generally couldn’t care less as to who’s running or ruining the country over there in Putrajaya. Save for a small portion of ‘coffee shop parliamentarians’ who’d go on yak, yakkety, yak, yakking about Najib, Rosmah, Zahid, etc. endlessly from dawn to dusk, the man in the street would usually just go about his own affairs and not be bothered about the ‘cold war’ brewing between Mahathir and Najib.
Thus, Mahathir who is already 92 years old finds himself on the losing ground so to speak when it comes to his efforts to bring down Najib through any means possible. It seems that Mahathir is almost at his wits end in trying just about every method under the sun to cut down Najib to size.
Najib has in a way morphed into being the most resilient, most thick skinned, untouchable, unaffected, immovable, most firmly entrenched Malaysia’s 6th Prime Minister.
Najib had a very good teacher and political mentor in none but Tun Dr.Mahathir himself. Although first thought to be a soft spoken political pushover, Najib Razak has proven to be the most obstinate, recalcitrant political juggernaut who has managed to turn the tables on Mahathir, his ex-mentor turned political nemesis.
If you had followed the unforeseen chain of events in mainstream Malaysian political upheavals which saw Mahathir first leaving then returning and finally quitting UMNO for good, you might be able to sense the dilemma that Malaysia’s once longest serving ex-Premier is going through.
He could have played safe like Tun Abdullah Badawi who has stayed out of the Malaysian political centrestage and minded his own personal business. Relax and rewind at home, spending his retirement, playing with his grandkids and family.
But Tun Dr.Mahathir is a perpetual politician. He may have hung up his political gloves but the elderly Malaysian statesman is still shadow boxing, throwing verbal punches and jabs at Najib over the latter’s infamous RM2.6 Billion receiving of the world’s biggest political donation into his personal coffers, initial denial then the ensuing affirmation of having had those billions and subsequent claim of having returned that humongous donation to its mysterious Saudi Arabian donor!
Top that up with his ever controversial spouse, the flamboyant big spending Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor just adds to Najib’s political migraines incessantly. Lately, Rosmah’s in the news for her jetting off to Istanbul, Turkey in a Malaysian Government leased private jetliner said to reach RM84 Million rental and hauling aboard of 14 mysterious fat suitcases containing God Knows What?
Does Najib lose any political ground because of that expose? No sirree! His ship is as watertight as an airtight submarine sailing through all the brouhaha that Mahathir & Co. throws his way without batting even once of his the proverbial eyelid!
Mahathir is practically at his wit’s end! He can barely make even the slightest dent on Najib’s political armor.
Najib has in a way fortified himself in all areas including a very subservient mainstream media and an army of apple polishers consisting of social media mercenaries and bloggers akin to the remora’s attaching themselves to the underbellies of the ruling Malaysian political leaders, feeding off the scraps falling out from their gluttony, regardless of how vile and corrupt they are!
Mahathir is bewildered and equally astounded at how true Najib’s motto of stating that ‘Cash is King’ buying his way into power, firmly entrenching and embedding himself deeper and deeper into his executive seat of political power at Putrajaya!
What has Mahathir not done to date in his attempt to bring down Najib?
He has put aside his loathing towards DAP’s Lim Kit Siang who had remained constantly as an obnoxious and painful thorn in the BN’s butt since the nation came into being.
He has sat besides Mat Sabu who had always lampooned Mahathir all those years when the former was in PAS!
He has presided over the Anti-Government get-togethers of the Opposition bigwigs alongside BERSIH’s Ambiga Sreenevasan and Maria Chin Abdullah, Haris Ibrahim, Azmin Ali, Kit Siang, Khalid Samad, Tian Chua, etc.
Unthinkable turn of events when it concerns Mahathir, our nation’s once longest serving BN Paramount Chief being together with Malaysia’s main Opposition figures.
Mahathir has brought about the signing of a million over ‘Citizens Declaration‘ calling for the removal of PM Najib Razak but it’s just so meaningless before the impenetrable political fortress of the latter.
Tun Dr.Mahathir’s adopted crusade against Najib by aligning himself with the likes of Kit Siang & Co. might be expedient but looking back at just how ineffective his plans have been to date, I don’t think he can dislodge Najib from being where he is now till 2018 when his official term in office ends.
Right now, it seems that Najib is showing his middle finger to all who question him about the controversial 1MDB issue, RM2.6 Billion Donation, his spendthrift wife’s private jet trips and her hauling away 14 large suitcases full of whatever it was overseas and Mahathir initiated ‘Citizens Declaration’!
If you look at the media reports lately, you’re sure to see Mahathir’s glum face compared to Najib who is practically laughing all along his way to the banks.
All I can say is that this earthly existence is just temporary. History records that all those who were corrupt and leached off from their nations here on earth did in one way or another get their due retributions but in the hereafter they will be judged by none other than Allahu Rabbul Alamin.
Who will have the last laugh then? Will it still be Najib or wily ol’ Tun?
