Hulu Selangor Showdown ~ BN’s forced to field an MIC candidate?

I came across the above video clip of the legendary Charlie Chaplin in a scene from one of his classic movies, ‘The Great Dictator’ where he parodied Adolf Hitler but amongst the most memorable scenes was this speech where he spoke very well of all that we cherish in our short, temporal lives here on Earth.

Let me share with you some of the memorable lines he spoke :

‘I’m sorry. I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone.

I should like to help everyone if possible?

Jew, Gentile, Black man, White. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that.

We want to live by each others happiness ; not by each others misery.

We don’t want to hate or despise one another…and this world has room for everyone. This Earth is rich…and can provide for everyone.

A way of life that can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned man’s soul. Has barricaded the world with hate. Has goosestepped us with misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance but has left us in want.

Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness hard and unkind.

We think too much and feel too little.

More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.

Without these qualities, life will be violent.. and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio has brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for universal brotherhood, for the unity of us all….”

Such are a portion of the words of wisdom uttered by Charlie Chaplin in the movie above.

Do our politicians today have any such thoughts for the betterment of the people?

Brutes have risen to power. Hatred and intolerance are the creed that most of our current day politicians practice without shame or remorse.

Today, we see politicians betray the trust of their voters and shamelessly hold with an iron grip on their ill gotten positions.

Their legitimate rights to represent the people who voted for them ended when they prostituted themselves for a handful of ringgits and illegitimately hold on to their posts after betraying the very political parties who nominated them to contest for the posts in the first place.

The BN have announced that their coalition party member @ the Malaysian Indian Congress will represent them in the coming Hulu Selangor P94 by elections even though the Indians are only about 18% of the populace in that parliamentary.

Malaysian politics is race based and the majority of the Malays living there in Hulu Selangor have voiced out that they want a candidate from their own to run for the parliamentary seat there which has become vacant following the recent death of the PKR Member of Parliament, Allahyarham Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Yet because of the historical election pact that the BN has made within the coalition, PM Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak has stuck to his guns and announced that the BN will be represented again by a candidate from the MIC, squashing rumors that an UMNO candidate will be nominated to run for the by elections there this time around?

Dato Hj Zainal Abidin Dato Hj Sakom, the YBK Chairman was amongst the names touted to be in consideration to represent the Malay majority constituents of Hulu Selangor but even he himself has endorsed Najib’s announcement saying that he respected the decision of the Prime Minister and has declared his full support for the BN’s candidate to come from the MIC.

The question being asked by many Malaysians today is whether the Hulu Selangorians will overlook the fact that the MIC Deputy President Dato Palanivel who was elected as the MP there from 1990 till he lost to the late PKR candidate Allahyarham Dato Zainal Abidin Ahmad in the last GE in 2008 has lost the grassroots support?

There is talk of the MIC fielding new blood instead of the President’s nominee Dato Palanivel. The MIC Information Chief P.Kamalanathan and Hulu Selangor MIC Youth Chief V.Mugilan are said to be amongst those being considered to be the BN candidate’s.

Whoever is chosen to represent the BN ought to take a cue from Charlie Chaplin’s character above and work towards the good of the people of Hulu Selangor and the entire nation.

They ought to prove their worth if elected to be the new Member of Parliament over there in Hulu Selangor and serve all the communities there regardless of the differences of race, religion and political preferences if they are to be considered for renomination in the coming GE provided they win in this April 25th P94 Hulu Selangor Parliamentary By Election?

Till then, it’s going to be a very hotly contested political campaign there in the sleepy hollows of Hulu Selangor.

I just hope that the voters there will get to vote in a calm, relative manner without the outsiders converging on to the parliamentary sparking off a free for all, etcetera in the name of democracy?

The Hulu Selangorians need development, peace and prosperity not political mayhem and chaos!

Let’s all pray for a positive campaign and an acceptable outcome for the people there.

Ameen.
