Malaysia is synonymous with wasting precious resources and splurging on events and activities that would best be held on a more moderate basis.
Concerts and shows are held on a grand scale that involves hundreds of thousands if not millions of ringgits just to entertain the masses or feed the egos of the elite few!
The recent holding of a wedding of a local singer and her millionaire husband in the Wilayah Persekutuan Masjid is such an example of how people who are extremely wealthy and famous splurge like hell as if there’s no tomorrow!
The Consumers Association of Penang laments the fact that these extravaganzas demean the role of the mosque to be a house of prayer to Almighty God but has been abused by such splurges and shows of wealth and influence, entry restricted to the rich and famous and specially invitied guests from the high society, thus desecrating a holy place of worship to become an exclusive by invitation only venue barring ordinary people from entry to a place that is supposed to be open to all!
I totally agree with the stand taken by CAP and express my regret that such a wasteful show of extravagance is being showcased by this nation as if Islam encourages such showing offs by these people who if they die tomorrow are not gonna be exclusively treated by the Malaikats Munkar and Naqir in their graves?
Are these people so very special that a holy mosque can be made into their special platform or dais to show off their wealth and supposedly high status in society?
It is sacriligeous to do such a thing in a mosque! I do not object to their holding their ‘Akad Nikah’ in the mosque but the way the whole mosque was blocked off to the public and made into a ‘rich and famous’ only affair is absolutely wrong in the faith of Islam!
‘Riya’ is haram and forbidden by The Prophet Muhammad (Sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) as per his hadith: “The thing I fear most for you is the lesser polytheism. They (companions) said : O Messenger of Allah! What is the lesser polytheism? He said : Showing off!

Saiyidina Ali ibni Abi Talib married the Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam’s daughter Saiyidatina Fatimah in a most modest ceremony and in a manner that showed his keeping to the Prophet’s advice to be moderate in all that we do.
Another artiste who got married like royalty including a grandiose ceremony at the Taman Tasik Permaisuri, Bandar Tun Razak ended up in tragedy when she had to end her marriage recently.
Grand celebrations and holding of proud ceremonies almost always ends up with tremendous stress and unnecessary attempts to live up to society’s scrutiny and expectations as well as inviting gossip and fitnah from the general public.
All these wasteful events could be best avoided and the resources be channeled to more worthy causes like supporting the many orphanages and old folks homes that every now and then cry out for financial help to keep operating.
Don’t you think that would be much more beneficial to society than to waste such precious resources to feed their egos?
The way this nation is spending money like hell towards pretentious displays of wealth and showing of pride is a major sin and wrong in any religious principles!
Only in the Hereafter will these wasteful actions be dealt with accordingly!
