Just came to learn about this fiasco. It took place in Sg. Petani on January the 8th,2006.
The presence of more than a 100 senior citizens with old Malay Muslim men and women amongst Indians queueing up to collect RM20 cash vouchers from the management of the local Sports TOTO betting shop really makes us wonder at how these senior citizens can be so bloody stupid and that desperate as not to consider their actions in willing to put their self respect and religion for sale….not that expensive at all!
They can make ‘halal’ what Allah SWT has deemed ‘haram’ @ forbidden all for just a measly 20 ringgits @US$4.50!I know that folks up north can sometimes be so gullible and practically swallow everything that any snake oil salesman comes up with and bedazzles them as in the case of the 10 year old boy who was reputed to be heal his sick mum with just a prayer and his spit that was mixed into a glass of well water somewhere in Baling, Kedah about 10 years ago!
People came from all over Malaysia, Singapore, Sabah Sarawak and even Borneo to get cured for all their sickness and diseases!
I just can shake my head in disbelief ! A measly RM20! No wonder the Malays are pretty sold out cheap when it comes to a question of morality!!! Sheeeesh!!!
Here’s the original email news that I received that is in Malay! Those who don’t believe me, go ahead and read it for yourselves! And look at the pictures and judge for yourselves! Pictures don’t lie!!!

Pegawai Agama Daerah Kuala Muda, Tuan Syeikh Muhammad Suhaimi Haji Salleh, ketika dihubungi berkata, setiap warga Islam dilarang menerima wang daripada judi.
Lebih-lebih lagi perbuatan mereka itu boleh mencemarkan nama baik Islam di kalangan masyarakat bukan Islam.

That’s it folks! For a measly 20 ringgits, their faith can be bought ‘lock, stock and barrel’! Damn!

wow…relax man…
Mahaguru58,just to point out that RM20 is equivalent to US5.33 at the exxchange rate of 3.75. Accuracy is important.
I wonder why the date in the photos was blanked out!
Mr Warrior,
Thanks for the forex update. I was just giving an approximate figure.
As for the blanked out date, that photo comes as it is from the email source. I am just sharing out the info as I received it.
As for the differences of opinion, I apologise for losing my cool!
Thanks for your feedback anyway.
mahaguru or warrior is just an id that we use to symbolise our leanings.
We are more around the same.
Only thing is that as humanbeings, we have our bloody egos to contend with.
At times we can shoot off our mouth according to the emotional state we are and at times we just can’t take criticism.
This blogging thingy is just an outlet to let off steam.
Rather than some psychos who go killing some other person, I choose to fire away at will against anything I feel is not right!
I am not perfect ; so is anyone else here on Earth.We never will be but that doesn’t stop us from trying to be so.
That doesn’t mean we have to agree with any Tom , Dick or Harry or as in our Malaysian case, any Ahmad, Ah Seng or Samy!
I believe that each and every one of us here have our own points.
Just happens to be my bloody blog , so I write as I damn well please.
If I have offended you by my posting, hey ..take it easy.
It was not directed specifically at you as a person.
We can agree to disagree.
That is our own individual rights.
You are not my enemy.
I have stated before that my posting is against those I am lambasting.
Just read if you want to..if you are not happy, by all means , mosey along and read any other blog that fits your style.
If you happen to be in the entertainment industry,its too bad that I just happen to touch on it generally.
Well…this is what I THINK and it’s MY VIEWPOINT!
Doesn’t mean you have to agree on all that I say or write.
You have the right to disagree.
This is the basic freedom of opinion.
That’s all there is to it.
If any blogger wants to please each and everybody who reads their blog, might as well don’t bother blogging in the first place.
I am myself. Never intended to be a hypocrite and write all goody goody stuff to please anyone.I will write as I see things.
That’s the very basic need of blogging.
You not happy about it. Too bad. Go write your own blog.
I will publish reasonable comments as I see fit.
Read my headings. I gave fair warning upfront. A Tit for Tat policy.
If you disagree with that, its up to you.
Live your life as you please.
Have a good day.
Dear sir,
A few doubts
1. This has been aired earlier by one of your reader, but let me as again, why is the date blacked-out. Since you said you got that from email as it is, there is no way for you to know that the exact date is 08.01 rite? So why are you passing infos that are not verified. Is there any valid news link on this?
2. I thought the elderly are queeing up to buy sports toto. Turns out, they are just receiving charity money. Are you saying charity money from “unhalal” source given by non-muslim is not acceptable? If you are interested, I can list out few of the likes that are being spread out openly and received openly by common people here in Malaysia.
3. Why are you accusng people of north as gullible while in your “example story” you wrote that people from practically the whole asian region fall for that idiocy
More later.
Oh another doub, is it not mahaguru a malay term for “the wise” rather than worrier. I guess Pendekar sounds more worrier to me. Just a doubt…
Welcome Shalu,
Been waiting for your visit for so long, I started to miss you!:P
1.The given date on the report is January 8 2006.
This email came to me through a yahoogroup.
As reporters do keep their sources confidential, I feel it is best for me to keep my sources the same.
I will try look for the news source link and update you once I get the link.
2.Money that is sourced from forbidden sources are clearly forbidden to be used by Muslims. You know that , I know that, most of us know that.
These old folks have no excuse to claim ignorance that the money they were lining up to receive is sourced from gambling activities which is haram.
I know you can come up with a thousand and one sources which are haram and people are making a living from it as so can I.
Even the ‘Kerajaan Malaysia’ taxes liquor and gambling plus revenue from all the pubs,bars,discos,hotels,social welfare lotteries, etc.
The posting is clearly focused on why these elderly Muslim folks are so hard up as to have to take money from a gambling source so blatantly?
It’s not as if I am saying they should do it on the sly.
They are old enough to know it’s haram to receive or even use such money.
At the end of the day, we can say it is up to the individual. He or she answers for their deeds. But I am lamenting the fact that these folks can be so desperate that they don’t give a damn anymore where the money comes from no matter that it is only 20 ringgits.
3. As to my statement that people in the north of the peninsular are more gullible is based on my knowledge of so many similar incidents that took place before . I am from Penang and have seen such happenings taking plce in Baling, before hence my saying so.
4. As to the ‘warrior’ ; he does seem too worrisome but I have replied to him and don’t feel like dwelling on the fella unnecessarily.
~~~
Dear Shalu,
When are you ever gonna write your own blog?
I have tried to log in to your ‘shark bites’ but seems your shark is toothless! 😀
Be a sport and start writing. You do seem to have so much to say and share but are depriving us of your pearls of wisdom.
Surely you can write apart from commenting and being a critic.
C’mon dear, let’s get your blog up and running. Will be glad to help you out with anything I can be of help.
Thanks for gracing my humble corner with your esteemed presence. Can’t wait to see the ‘sharks really biting’!
Take care.
Sir,
I don’t know how to post a blog. How do you do it? can you write some sort of how-to blog step by step guide. I would appreciate any help from internet sleuths like you. I’ve been busy mocking another pundit like you, (feel frr to check it out)… did not have time to visit your esteemed site! I am sorry for that!!
Now to the issue,
If you already know that even the government financal source are “stained” with so called non-halal money, why are you harping on these poor people who might have not enoug money to buy daily groceries. The RM20 might have feed them for days. God..have stopped sending fruits from heaven since Mariam Bibi you know :)) and even if he chooses to send, he will only send it to selected few. Other’s need to eat too you know.
So, it is wrong for the ToTo owners to give money to these poor fellows. It is wrong for them to receive too. What’s your suggestion? How to feed them when they are hungry?
I still have doubts on the pictures’ dates…but i’ll let it pass since you are upholding the esteemed ethics of journalism.
I know people from up north are gullible, but then are not others too? It’s god ordained you know…just read METRO or any other trash tabloid and see how gullible folks all over are…north to south east to west!!!
more later
Thank you for now. I want to write a fitting comment on your previous entry (the one with Mawi’s picture), but am busy for now. I’ll drop in later.
mahaguru58, when i first read the article, it struck me as being odd that the issue of the northerners being gullible is mentioned in the context of the issue of some old people going to the TOTO shop to recieve some handout. I really dont see the connection at all. But then as you mentioned in your last posting in responce to my posting somewhere else (which I dont see it being posted)its your blog and you will write as you damn please, i dont really bother to find out
One point I would like to make, why is it that bloggers always says~~ this is my blog, I write what I want, you dont like it, go on make your own”. I see this in many blogs. This statement is always made when they are angry with someone who happens to disagree with views thats written.
The funny thing is that they ask for comments, they allow comments and yet when some people gave a different view, bloggers jumped like a kera kena belacan.
Most of these people are just plain hypocrite, and I have come across many bloggers that get angry so easily. Its not about ego my dear friend. Its about not being able to take critism for what one writes.
Its ok for these kind of bloggers to condemn or critise the goverment or the masses etc, but when pointed out that thier writings are not necessarily correct, or people dont agree with what is written ,they get all fumed up/piss off. SOme even ban.
What ever happened to freedom to express one`s view. Why must bloggers take offence if views expressed by readers do not conform to thier views? after all, it is just another readers` view.
Nobody ask bloogers to please anybody. Readers who are critical of what is being posted are also not here to please anybody.
We are just exchanging views!
If you mahaguru58 cant take contradictry views, dont allow comments to be posted! Period.
Orang yang senang naik angin ni, there is something wrong with them. Dont you agree mahaguru58?
Well my fellow blogger, it is true tht many bloggers do not take kindly to criticism.
I used to be one.Shalu can vouch for this.
I couldn’t take her constant jabs and needling before!:D
As you recommended,I didn’t allow comments and I even deleted my previous postings altogether.
I am past that stage now.
Being able to take the brickbats along with the bouquets if there is any is the mark of a seasoned blogger.
I am just passing the mark.
I came into the blogging scene just 2 years back.
We are all susceptible to emotional highs and lows.
Just as you and me can at times entertain some real pain in the asses but sometimes we just don’t have to allow these sobs room in our comments space.
It’s up to the individual blogger.
Just like you don’t have open house everyday, it is up to the bloggers.
Some have something to say and they say it but feel they don’t want to allow comments.
So they do not allow comments on that particular post.
You don’t go around demanding that people do this and that to suit YOUR NEEDS.
You don’t have that right my friend.
It’s up to the bloggers to allow or disallow comments.
You can’t demand to be let in someone’s blog if the person does not like the way you comment or choose insulting words and insinuations against the blogger.
Just like you wouldn’t want an obnoxious menace into your home, the blogger has his or her rights to refuse admission!
Hope you are clear about this.
I hope you use words that are acceptabe if you intend to post comments in anybody’s blog if you want to say anything.
Remember, courtesy begets courtesy.
That’s all there is to it.
If I want to refuse you to comment in my blog, I can just ban you if I wish.
I don’t think you blog on your own, do you?
To go around accusing people of this and that without you yourself blogging is tantamount to criticizing as you please without caring whether you are offending people or not.
Prove us wrong. Be polite.
People wouldn’t mind having you commenting. Believe me.
Surely you know how to behave and speak as a gentleman.
worrier, well said! Let me second you in everything you said in your latest comment.
Yes, mahaguru used to dlete each and every comment of me. he even disable commenting. It’s different now. he’s came out of his shell and its good. perhaps he can disable comment moderating so that the comments will appear real time! You can always delete offensive comments later mahaguru. comment moderating delays the whole process so much, it become boring.
Anyway, congratulation for getting braver.
Now, to the issue….
